12 Tips to Make Your Move Simple and Stress-Free
Packing your belongings and moving is often fraught with high emotions and involves a to-do list a mile long. So, it’s tempting to give only passing attention to hiring a mover and the related incidental costs. That could be a mistake—for your wallet and your peace of mind. Moving can be quite expensive. A typical full-service interstate move costs about $4,300, while the same in-state move might cost about $2,500. And while the moving industry has many fine companies, it is notorious for fraud and dirty tactics by so-called rogue movers.
Here are 12 tips to make your move simple and avoid the hassle.
Choose a type of move: You have two basic choices: full service and a relatively new hybrid of the do-it-yourself and full service.
For full-service moves, moving within a state is charged by the hour, while moving across state lines is charged by weight and mileage.
With a hybrid move, a mover will drop off a large container at your home for you to pack. The mover will then load the container onto a truck, drive the belongings to your new location and drop off the container for you to unload. Because you’re doing the manual labor of packing and unpacking, it’s far less costly than a full-service move. more...
Relocation tips:
#1 Subscribe to the Local Newspaper
A great way to familiarize yourself with a new city is to subscribe to the local newspaper. This media source will educate you about the pros and cons of the city, it will inform you where the most crime in the city occurs, and it will also educate you about the culture of the city.
Relocating Tip #2 - Join Facebook Groups
Another great way to start interacting with people from your new town and to learn about the culture of the town you plan on relocating to is to join Facebook groups related to the city. These groups will allow you to get answers from people who live in the area.
Relocating Tip #3 - Work with a realtor
Realtors can be a great resource for information about your new town. They have insight into the local housing market and can help you find the best home for you and your family. They can also help you identify things that you will need to do when you arrive in town, such as pet licensing, car licensing and business licensing requirements.
Read how we helped one family relocate to Baltimore:
“I accepted a position with a law firm in Baltimore City, Maryland in December and needed to find a trustworthy realtor to assist me and my family with our move. We needed to sell our home in Delaware and find a home near Baltimore City that would accommodate two generations, my husband and me and our son and his wife.
Our special needs included (but were not limited to):
• We did not want to be put in a position of having to pay two mortgages, so selling our home in Delaware needed to be coordinated with buying a home in Maryland.
• Time was of the essence.
- I was starting my new job on January 3rd so my time was limited to search for a new home.
• I would need immediate temporary housing in Maryland.
•My husband needed a “work” office in the home, away from the family setting.
• Our son needed a “study” office in the home.
• The home needed to be handicap accessible.
• Ultimately, it appeared my in-laws would be moving in as well, so the home needed to be able to accommodate three generations. I was referred by a staff member of my new employer to Marina Brockman with Equity Realty.
Marina was excellent as a realtor. She was very conscientious of our needs and made herself available 24/7 to accomplish what needed to be done.
She truly went the “extra mile” in helping us find the right home in the right neighborhood to suit our needs.
